CHAPTER 8

“W ell, that was a bust ,” Martha greeted Pru the next afternoon. “No one at the senior center admitted to knowing who Victor’s lawyer is.”

“It sounds like he didn’t have any close friends here, from the little we know about him,” she commented. “I can’t imagine him – or anyone – telling people they don’t know very well that they’ve made a will and name the lawyer they used.”

“Unless they were afraid they were gonna get killed,” Martha mused. “Then they might say that to scare off the killer. Otherwise, I think you’re right. Poop.”

Pru sat down on the sofa next to her. Teddy sat on Martha’s other side, his fluffy white ears tuned into the conversation.

“What’s Teddy been up to today?” she asked.

“We had a good play with the ball, didn’t we?” Martha stroked the little cotton furball. “And we went to the café.” She crinkled her brow. “I might have to stop going there quite so often. I think I’ve been there every day this week and it adds up fast.”

“Why don’t I buy the cupcakes next time?” she offered.

“I wasn’t hinting, but thanks.” Martha smiled. “I’ve nearly paid off my credit card which is good – your rent money is certainly helping. And now that I have all the different color collars and leads for Teddy, I shouldn’t need to spend much on him at the moment, apart from his food of course, and if he needs a new toy.”

“What about fabric for his new bandanas?”

“Oh, yeah.” Martha nodded. “I forgot about that. Maybe next week I can go to the craft shop and browse. I only need a small amount of material, so it shouldn’t be too expensive, even if we get something real fancy for him.”

“Ruff!” Teddy looked excited at the thought of a new bandana.

“Now we’ve gotta talk to Cynthia,” Martha directed.

“When?”

“Maybe next week. We’ve done a ton of sleuthing this week and I might need a little break.”

“I understand,” Pru replied. It would be nice to take it easy over the weekend, read a book, and take Teddy for walks. She wondered if Jesse had finished reading that thriller he’d borrowed from the library and if it was any good, then instantly told herself not to think about him.

“Maybe I can work on my retired lady detective script.” Martha brightened. “Yeah – I can get you to act out some scenarios.”

“Me?” Pru blinked. “What sort of scenarios?”

“Nothing dangerous – I think. I’ve gotta come up with something first. But you might need to practice some yoga poses.”

“Why would I need to practice yoga for your script?” She hadn’t done much yoga for a while now, something she felt a little guilty about.

“Oh, you know.” Martha waved a hand in the air. “You might have to dodge out of the way suddenly. See, I’ve got those two hot shot detectives who aren’t so hot trying to solve the case and they get in my retired lady detective’s way. So she’s gotta put them in their place.
