CHAPTER 8
âW ell, that was a bust ,â Martha greeted Pru the next afternoon. âNo one at the senior center admitted to knowing who Victorâs lawyer is.â
âIt sounds like he didnât have any close friends here, from the little we know about him,â she commented. âI canât imagine him â or anyone â telling people they donât know very well that theyâve made a will and name the lawyer they used.â
âUnless they were afraid they were gonna get killed,â Martha mused. âThen they might say that to scare off the killer. Otherwise, I think youâre right. Poop.â
Pru sat down on the sofa next to her. Teddy sat on Marthaâs other side, his fluffy white ears tuned into the conversation.
âWhatâs Teddy been up to today?â she asked.
âWe had a good play with the ball, didnât we?â Martha stroked the little cotton furball. âAnd we went to the café.â She crinkled her brow. âI might have to stop going there quite so often. I think Iâve been there every day this week and it adds up fast.â
âWhy donât I buy the cupcakes next time?â she offered.
âI wasnât hinting, but thanks.â Martha smiled. âIâve nearly paid off my credit card which is good â your rent money is certainly helping. And now that I have all the different color collars and leads for Teddy, I shouldnât need to spend much on him at the moment, apart from his food of course, and if he needs a new toy.â
âWhat about fabric for his new bandanas?â
âOh, yeah.â Martha nodded. âI forgot about that. Maybe next week I can go to the craft shop and browse. I only need a small amount of material, so it shouldnât be too expensive, even if we get something real fancy for him.â
âRuff!â Teddy looked excited at the thought of a new bandana.
âNow weâve gotta talk to Cynthia,â Martha directed.
âWhen?â
âMaybe next week. Weâve done a ton of sleuthing this week and I might need a little break.â
âI understand,â Pru replied. It would be nice to take it easy over the weekend, read a book, and take Teddy for walks. She wondered if Jesse had finished reading that thriller heâd borrowed from the library and if it was any good, then instantly told herself not to think about him.
âMaybe I can work on my retired lady detective script.â Martha brightened. âYeah â I can get you to act out some scenarios.â
âMe?â Pru blinked. âWhat sort of scenarios?â
âNothing dangerous â I think. Iâve gotta come up with something first. But you might need to practice some yoga poses.â
âWhy would I need to practice yoga for your script?â She hadnât done much yoga for a while now, something she felt a little guilty about.
âOh, you know.â Martha waved a hand in the air. âYou might have to dodge out of the way suddenly. See, Iâve got those two hot shot detectives who arenât so hot trying to solve the case and they get in my retired lady detectiveâs way. So sheâs gotta put them in their place.
